Gastric Sleeve Qualifications

What are the Qualifications of Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

Gastric Sleeve Surgery is accepted across the United States as a safe treatment for morbid obesity. This procedure is becoming more and more popular and is used in place of other procedures like the gastric bypass or the Lap-Band. The Gastric sleeve procedure helps patients to not only lose the weight but to keep it off. However, all qualified weight loss surgeons in Dallas will require you to undergo certain tests to make sure that you are the right candidate for this procedure.

How do you know if you are a potential candidate for the Gastric Sleeve Procedure?

Being overweight does not automatically qualify you for the Gastric Sleeve procedure. You must meet certain criteria before your doctor will deem you a candidate for this surgery.

First, your BMI, or Body Mass Index, must meet certain guidelines. Morbidly obese adults who have a BMI index of 40 or higher, will be considered for this surgery. If your Body Mass Index is 35, you can still qualify if you also have a “comorbidity”. A comorbidity is defined as an additional health issue that is related to excess weight. These conditions include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, sleep apnea, joint pain, and asthma. You must also be between the ages of 18 and 65,

To qualify for surgery, your doctor will make sure that you don’t have other health issues which could be considered complication and make surgery more of a risk for you. If the complications are actually attributed to obesity, an initial weight loss might be in order to improve your health, so as to make Gastric Sleeve surgery a viable option.  Your doctor may prescribe a dietary and exercise regimen to help you lose enough weight to dramatically reduce the comorbidity or complication factor in order for you to proceed with the Gastric Sleeve surgery.

Your mental attitude is a significant factor as well. This surgery is not a simple one step procedure but requires many lifestyle changes. Psychologically, some patients are unable to cope with such dramatic alterations in the way they live, including adding exercise to their daily routine or re-thinking their food choices.

Physical and psychological evaluations that might be made by your physician and your insurance company could include:

  • 3 years or more of obesity
  • BMI of 40+
  • BMI of 35+ with comorbidity
  • Between the age of 18 and 60
  • Failed at other weight loss options
  • Have an understanding of possible risks and side effects
  • Open to making significant changes in your lifestyle
  • No history of alcohol or drug abuse
