Forms of Protein
Protein supplements come in many different forms. There are 2 very common types of proteins; whey protein concentrate and whey protein isolate. Products can have one or the other, or a combination of the two. If you are lactose intolerant, you may tolerate products with whey protein isolate more so than whey protein concentrate.
Whey is the most popular form because it is a complete protein, which includes all nine of the amino acids, the building blocks of the body. Some patients are vegan and prefer a plant-based protein such as soy, pea, rice, hempseed, or spirulina.
Price
Protein powders also come with varying price tags. Convenient ready-to-drink protein shakes are pricier, but convenience tends to be more important for many. They may set you back between $9 and $15 for a four pack of 8-12 oz servings. Just be aware that you may be required to drink 3-4 each day to reach your recommended daily protein goal depending on what your physician or registered dietitian has recommended to you before and after surgery.
Protein powders can cost anywhere between $30 and $60 depending on the quality and quantity. Be sure to try samples first to determine which you like before purchasing. Most powders come in bulk packaging.
Flavors
Some enjoy sticking with the basic flavors available; chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, latte, peanut butter, or cookies and cream. But it’s important to understand that you are more likely to continue getting your recommended amount of protein via protein shakes if you enjoy what you’re drinking. Get creative with your shakes! Here are some great flavor enhancers you can try:
Cocoa, extracts (vanilla, lemon, caramel, peppermint to name a few), instant powdered coffee, 1 date pureed in, ¼ cup of fruit, peanut butter powder, Torani sugar-free syrups, cinnamon, apple pie spice, nutmeg, or other spices. Mix any of these with one of the basic protein flavors or purchase an unflavored protein powder and experiment yourself.
When selecting quality protein supplements, always study the labels on protein powders and ready to drink protein shakes. The best way to shop for protein shakes is to follow these simple guidelines:
